Interview with Lorenzo Casadio, cinematographer of SHE

On the occasion of the world premiere of SHE at the Locarno Film Festival (August 9 and 10, Semaine de la Critique), Collettivo Chiaroscuro published an in-depth interview with the film’s cinematographer Lorenzo Casadio.

Casadio reflects on the challenges of creating the visual language for a documentary that gives voice to Vietnamese women working in one of the world’s largest electronics industrial parks. Protecting the anonymity of current workers was one of the most delicate aspects, requiring innovative framing solutions to both safeguard identities and maintain cinematic power.

His approach alternates between intimacy and distance: handheld shots close to the women to capture their presence and emotions, and overhead angles that mimic surveillance cameras to represent the pervasive control of the factory system.
This aesthetic tension embodies the broader themes of the film — oppression versus resistance, alienation versus self-expression.
